Holder of a degree in Theology and Humanities (1996), he obtained the Advanced Studies Diploma in ‘Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies’ in 2010, as part of the Doctoral Program of the University of Lisbon and the New University of Lisbon. He has been the Executive Director of Oikos – Cooperation and Development (NGO) since October 2004. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Board of the Ibero-American League of Civil Society Organizations, representing Oikos. Between 1994 and 2004, he was responsible for managing projects and programs of Oikos in various countries in Africa and Latin America. From 1990 to 1994, he volunteered for the NGO “Leigos para o Desenvolvimento,” first in São Tomé and Príncipe (1990-91) and later, overseeing the secretariat in Lisbon. From 2002 to 2007, with the support of the Avina Foundation, João José Fernandes was actively involved in issues related to strengthening Third Sector Organizations and promoting Corporate Social Responsibility. Currently, João Fernandes is engaged in several Civil Society Initiatives on the Intergenerational Fairness and Future Generations (International level: Pact for the Future; EU level Fit for Future Generations Campaign; Portugal: promotion of national framework law on Well-being and Future Generations).
